But Samuel Alexander, following the tradition of Henry Thoreau and William Morris, has written a ‘utopia of sufficiency’, in which a simple living community of poet-farmers rebuild their society after the collapse of civilisation. Not only was it informative but being written in novel format, it kept me engrossed wanting/needing to know how it ended. Although he spoke occasionally of his inner struggles and the causes of his anxiety, he was unable to express himself beyond a certain point, and his wife, Elizabeth, did not force the issue. Some people believe this simple living community flourishes peacefully to this day, lost to the world in its own harmonious, aesthetic existence. Mortimer offered all this as an explanation for his breakdown, which he insisted was not a psychological breakdown but a spiritual one.

After a few short weeks, however, just as Flynn became fully versed in the existing state of his company and of the oil markets more generally, he made a public announcement that would astonish and confuse not just the board of directors, but the entire world. Finally, I must acknowledge Rob Hopkins and the Transition Movement, for developing what I consider to be the most promising framework for bringing about a just and sustainable, post-carbon world.

He spoke at length of how intensely disillusioned he had become with his material success in the world, the emptiness of its pleasures, and the shallowness of its glamour. Mortimer looked up and assured his wife, who had gone a deathly pale, that given his uncertainty over life’s justification, he was not about to kill himself – at least, not yet.

She had heard of scientists testing hypotheses about everything from the number of electrons in an atom to the distance between galaxies, but she had never heard of scientists testing the question of whether life itself was justifiable. i took with Entropia Life and they say "we havent permission from toulan to show globals and statistics". It was not until about a year later that Starfinder released the downloadable tracker software, which made tracking globals slightly more accurate. He even started taking cello lessons, which secretly had been a lifelong dream of his, and he proved to have a natural flair for the instrument.Without taking any questions from journalists, the iconoclastic Flynn removed his bowler hat, humbly bowed his head to the flashing cameras, and quietly left the building never to be seen or heard of again. Operating most of the time beneath the level of consciousness, myths define the contours of the human situation and the human condition, placing us in the cosmos and structuring our identities. This book has just been published in French, with a foreword by Serge Latouche, so to mark this occasion I’m publishing the introduction to Entropia below (in English).

No matter how heavy the burden of freedom might be, the poets knew that the burden would always be preferable to the chains from which it arose. Its a well written exploration of what life could look like if we voluntarily choose a path of simplicity rather than materiality and avoid the worst outcomes of a warming planet. One of the more intriguing attempts to date to imagine a viable future on the far side of our civilisation’s decline and fall, Samuel Alexander’s Entropia borrows the language of Utopian literature to present alternative visions of politics, society, and spirituality in the aftermath of the industrial age. Life was universally affirmed by these poet-farmers, and for the first and only time in human history the distinction between art and life blurred to vanishing point. One day, as the children were outside playing in the fields under the morning sun, Mortimer invited Elizabeth into his study where, at long last, something of an explanation was attempted. reason is there need to be at least 4 (or 5 not sure) tracker running to recognize a global on a planet. Merry Mayhem doesn't quite do it since everyone who isn't the main shooter has to pull back a bit, but, if we had a steady supply of Chary and Hydra could we make a 30K plus ped per hour team of 12? Something had changed in Mortimer, as if he had drawn a line under some of his troubles, somehow containing and controlling them, even if he had not yet solved them.
