It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. I was crushed, and haven’t thrown another party since (except my son’s 1st birthday, which no one came to except one friend 😭).

As an adult, I immediately loved it—in college, I threw what would have been a really fun Halloween party for my work friends, who all said they would come and told me literally just hours before how excited they were…but when it came time for the party, literally no one showed up except my 3 closer friends. Some of my favourite characters in the book are Katerina the ‘Catrina’, the elegant skull girl in pink, based upon an engraving by Guadalupe Posada; Alma, the invisible girl who happens to be the prettiest monster in town; and the witch – with a secret name that I cannot reveal yet – who will feature as the main character on my next picture book! When I started making the book, I didn’t notice how much I had in common with Gustavo, but the more I got to understand him, I realised that telling this story was important for me because I wanted to show that being shy doesn’t mean that you don’t enjoy the company of people – or in this case, monsters! You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! He loves looking at the “ghostes” and also enjoys talking about Gustavo’s violin, being an avid music appreciator. I’m glad this book has given my toddler a character to identify with—it’s a very validating feeling to have your own complex emotions represented! Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example.

The first blend I tried was too limited; the second one was too colourful and there was nothing really magical about it, so I had to stop for a while and think about the world I had just created. The Klaus Flugge Prize is funded personally by Klaus Flugge and run independently of Andersen Press. Very nice story and illustrations, keeps my little one engaged and creates opportunity for further discussions while looking at the illustrations. Mat: With this in mind, another thing that I adored about the book was the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Flavia: Hmmm, this is an interesting question… I am a fan of Bosch and Pieter Brueghel who are known by painting incredibly detailed scene, but also some Mexican folk art tends to have lots of details and colour, I guess I must have picked up something from them!

I’ve been seeing this book on Pinterest/ig influencers’ photos of their kids’ seasonal bookshelves and I wasn’t sure about it—I am very picky about what messages I am representing to my toddler through books, and like them to have nice illustrations as well.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Mat: The design of the whole book, from the cover to the endpapers and everything in between is a delight.
