Description

Each volcano around the world can have a unique sound as there are reports of some eruption to be relatively quiet. These plates shift around, either towards one another, away from one another, or alongside one another, and this movement is what triggers a volcanic eruption.

During the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, BGS laboratory analysis of ash samples, collected from a car windscreen in the UK, showed that single grains of ash were formed of both glass and crystal fragments. There are around 139 volcanoes in Indonesia, all of which are part of the famous Pacific Ring of Fire. Its three major islands, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, are flocked by thousands of international and local tourists each year to discover the beauty of its land formations. For those living alongside volcanoes, knowing about volcanic hazards is just one way that people can reduce their risk. In more violent eruptions, the magma conduit is cored out by an explosive blast, and solid fragments are ejected in a great cloud of ash-laden gas that rises tens of thousands of metres into the air. In other cases, entrapped gases tear the magma into shreds and hurl viscous clots of lava into the air. An active volcano is one that has erupted within the last 10,000 years or it has some type of activity going on.

In 1991, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines ejected sulphur dioxide which formed a haze of sulphuric acid. Every one of them is different, some erupt in explosions while others have lava that slowly flows out onto the ground. Gaseous emissions from volcanic vents over hundreds of millions of years formed the Earth's earliest oceans and atmosphere, which supplied the ingredients vital to evolve and sustain life. Although volcanic eruption forecasting is not 100% accurate, the latest technologies we have can reduce the risk of mishaps through evacuation, until an effective “engineered volcano” has transpired. This labelling activity will help children to reinforce their knowledge of the different parts of the volcano, such as the ash cloud and lava flume. Normally, lava domes form within the crater of a previous volcanic eruption or can even form independently. These geological features are formed when molten rock, ash, and gas escape from the Earth's interior and reach the surface.
