Billingham always keeps the pace high and the action flowing and there is very little here that feels wasted; everything is important later on, even the parts that you don't realise are important until it's nearly too late. The victim's partner, a police officer on maternity leave as she's 8 months pregnant, is also keen to find out more, especially as it appears that her partner was keeping secrets from her.

A growing number of suicides start looking like murder in Billingham’s absorbing 11th novel featuring Det.He's like a pumped-up three year old, having just figured out that not giving his older siblings his candy is a possibility, and he uses it EVERYWHERE. This was at a point where I simply had to know what happened and I ended up turning down a good night's sleep as I felt compelled to see how things ended. DI Helen Weeks and her partner DI Paul Hopwood are back from their rather stressful murder-solving trip away and settling back into life in Manchester. Reviewing the first episode, The Guardian 's Sam Wollaston concluded that: " In The Dark is by no means a trope-free zone.

Detective Constable Helen Weeks and Detective Sergeant Paul Hopwood have a relationship that looks like it will be leading to marriage. But when his highly pregnant life partner Helen starts to ask questions, it soon becomes clear to her, that a few things don´t fit into the picture her colleagues want to draw. Now that he’s sold enough drugs to support a girlfriend and a baby son, his mate Easy Dennison offers him a boost up the next rung of the ladder.Although not thrilled with the idea, Theo does as asked, with the result being that the car swerves and crashes into a bus stop and kills Paul Hopwood. She's stuck in a cramped flat with noisy neighbours and a partner who doesn't seem overjoyed at the thought of the pending arrival.

Since then, Gillingham has published a further 14 novels (as of 2017) featuring London-based detective Tom Thorne. The worst part is that when the answers start to come, at last, after about three hundred and FIFTY damn pages, it is so damn predictable.

Every connection, every reveal, every twist made me go "Why yes OF COURSE that's how it fits together! Billingham produces an astonishing final twist to complete his most ambitious and most accomplished book. The cover of this book has a quote from The Times – presumably London – which states that “…the final twist is brilliantly clever and shocking.

And when Paul´s boss shows up at her doorstep and a stranger breaks into her house Helen knows by instinct, that something is terribly wrong. This week’s episode saw a lot more of Matt King’s idiosyncratic pathologist character, which injects just the right amount of comic relief while helping push the plot on a little too. Again, this wasn't a big enough distraction to ruin the story, but it was enough to unsettle the pace of reading, especially as the pace and intrigue was kept fairly high. The action then switches to three weeks earlier and centres around the eight months pregnant DC Helen Weeks who works in the Child Protection Unit and her partner Paul Hopwood, a detective sergeant in a CID team.Far be it for us to tell BAFTA what to do with their awards, but MyAnna Buring really does take In the Dark into the light. However enjoyable King has been so far, comic relief would have been more than a little jarring here. Just weeks from giving birth, how will she survive in a world where death is an occupational hazard? As a 38-week pregnant Helen is about to take maternity leave, she is struck by a personal tragedy which threatens to upend her life.
