Some parts of the plot are reasonably easy to guess but the overall story is well thought out and there are plenty of little twists thrown in.

I liked that whilst it's his story, he wasn't the main player in the investigation itself but gave a different point of view. Some of his new colleagues are resentful at first, particularly DI Burgess who tries to rubbish everything Tanner suggests. The twists and turns in the story kept me guessing and I enjoyed the characters which I felt were very believable and I could empathise with. The hire fleets were largely requisitioned by the admiralty, many rafted together on the open Broads and at entrances to prevent enemy sea planes landing, and several boatyards began to build military vessels for the war effort. As demand for boating holidays aboard wherries increased, and the holiday season was extended, they were permanently converted for pleasure use. The phonograph system of recording music and spoken word on cylinders, to then be played on portable machines, was initially invented by Thomas Edison in 1887, but the use of wax cylinders was introduced by Alexander Graham Bell a few years later with his “Gramophone” system. Bloodlands is Chris Brandon’s first original drama series commission and the first drama from newly formed production company HTM Television. An afternoon spent trawling the internet for some answers this week led me off on a tangent, but ultimately solved a puzzle and provided me with an earlier date for at least one of the sets.

According to his daughter, Jennifer Woods, in her book “A Famous Broadland Pioneer”, Herbert also purchased several acres of marshland at Horning, just upstream of Swan Corner. The eastern coastline of Britain was thought to to be the most likely point of attack, with East Anglia in particular considered to be the most vulnerable. Thousands of troops were moved to East Anglia during those early years of the war and they all needed accommodation. Do not misunderstand me, I don't like when the protagonist is diminished, but neither when he/she is put in the light at the expense of someone else. Meeting new people, meeting celebrities, getting your costume and travelling to set are all exciting parts of being on a TV set.

Whilst the Blakes agency began producing annual yachting lists and brochures from 1908 onwards, Hoseasons from the 1940s, and other agencies including Bradbeer, Helmsman and Pennant’s popping up at various points along the way, many boatyards have also produced their own brochures, advertising leaflets and booklets over the years. It also possibly helped me to push the date of the photographs back in to the 1950s, maybe even the first half of the decade going by the clothes and hairstyles seen above. A girl thrown from a church tower, a man sacrificed to Satan, and a priest murdered at the hands of the Devil.

The scrapbook notes that Hoseasons had been fully booked for the two weeks they wanted when they had telephoned them. Whilst affiliated to Harry Blake’s agency and listed in his annual yachting lists, Bunn also produced a small, hard backed book which served as both a brochure for his motor cruiser hire and as a sales catalogue for prospective owners. Roys in those days, when Fred Roy had wrested control back into the family, was a good employer providing apprenticeships and lots of support to young workers in all departments. Around half of the 20 photographs and negatives were obviously attributable to Broadland – a number of shots of the boat the photographer hired (more on that later), and a few landscape scenes which were unmistakably taken during the same trip.Although it did hold echos of his trademark humour in some of the dialogue between the two main characters, but nothing on the scale of Capstan and Dewbush!

As this is the first book in the series we learn all about the main characters early on and the scene setting can take a bit of time but it was all worth it as it made the story flow much better later on and visualising everything was easier when I knew what people looked like and the lay of the land. The entry for the Vesta class from the 1954 edition of Blake’s “Holiday’s Afloat” brochure can be seen on the left.
