The book was written in 2016 but it takes place in 2003, which makes the gender nonsense at least a decade ahead of its time. It’s essential to fill the (mainly white and male-dominated) comic industry with new and powerful voices like Gabby Rivera's. The truly beautiful and unique thing about this book is the incredible visibility of queer spaces, and especially queer spaces for women of colour. I loved seeing her discover feminism, what it means to her, and where she fits into this larger movement.

I also really loved that she learns from her family and she has a support system around her, ready to uplift and encourage her.Harlowe is racist, transphobic, man-hating and the most stereotypical "feminist" ever - but not actual feminist, the type of feminist most people think of and most people HATE. But that also goes to show just how entitled some white folks can be with topics like racism and the fact that it was pointed out so blatantly has me applauding. Puerto Rican and brown and from the Bronx, she comes out to her parents just before stepping off a plane to begin a summer internship with Harlowe Brisbane, the Pussy Power feminist who is about to change her life. What I found with Juliet Takes A Breath was a character I could adore but a story short on depth because…graphic novel length, I think. the white saviour complex in the form of harlowe brisbane was portrayed brilliantly, as was juliet's character arc regarding her idolization of harlowe.

she learns a lot about herself, her community, feminism and her value as a latinx who has come from the bronx. She’s this lady that never sleeps because she’s working on a Master’s Degree while raising my little brother and me and pretty much balancing the rhythm of an entire family on her shoulders.Juliet sets off to discover herself, and both what she finds and what she learns are different and better than what she expected.

She goes there to be the Pussy Lady’s intern, a very well loved white feminist lady who wrote Juliet’s favourite book, Raging Flower. No suelo dar 5 estrellas a novelas gráficas porque siempre siento que es muy poquito lo que nos pueden dar, pero Juliet Takes a Breath se las ganó apenas empezando. During this internship she gets introduced to a super diverse group of queer people and finds a queer space to belong for the first time. Juliet is a Latinx lesbian who has gotten the chance of her life, to intern with her role model for the summer, leaving the Bronx to Portland. Trigger and Content Warnings for homophobia, racism, fatshaming, sexual harassment, smoking (weed), use of d-slur (in a reclaiming nature). But the overall joy and warmth of the story made it very worth a read, and I’d imagine it to be empowering, too. I received a copy of the book from Riverdale Avenue Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The last book that elicited a similar reaction from me was Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I loved how Gabby did not shy away from toxic masculinity, the problematic religious views of homosexuality, and racism. Juliet constantly struggles with how she should feel about feminism and queer theory, when neither of these things were made for her, or with her in mind.

in case you don't know, the original story is about a young girl named juliet, who moves to portland for a summer internship with her favorite author. Gabby Rivera is a Bronx-born, queer Puerto Rican author on a mission to create the wildest, most fun stories ever. On top of all that, Juliet Takes a Breath also has themes of different kinds of romantic relationships and how self-love plays an important role in that.so many things that are all over my Twitter feed but rarely seem to make it to commercial YA/NA literature, especially with a queer POV.
