About this deal

Looking for a heated blanket to share with your partner? We recommend Woolrich’s Heated Electric Blanket. We like this blanket for many reasons: it comes in seven unique colors and in a wide range of sizes—from throw all the way to king-size—making it perfect for every couple’s needs. It also feature 20 different heat settings, which is the highest range on our list and perfect for couples with different heat needs. The more heat settings, the better. Whether you’re just looking for a little extra coziness for your movie night or genuinely want to be completely enveloped in warmth, a range of heat levels allows you to better customize that experience. Most of our selections on this list have three or more heat settings, with a maximum of 10. Auto-Off Functions Though some of these heated blankets are indeed made for layering onto your bed, we still recommend avoiding sleeping with it on or burying it beneath other bedding. A heated blanket with an auto-off setting and/or timer will help prevent overheating and encourage safer use in case you nod off while it’s still on. Every heated throw blanket in this guide has an auto-off function, and we’ve denoted the maximum run time for each one. Material First, a word on safety: Electric throw blankets emit extremely low, non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as they heat up. Many standard household appliances also emit EMFs, and they’re generally considered low-risk for the majority of the population to use. However, because of these EMFs, the fragility of the electric wires inside of the blanket, and the prolonged heat exposure that these products provide, certain users may want to proceed with caution. For the technical side of this piece, I consulted with Joel Hawk, a veteran of Illinois-based UL Solutions, who oversees the testing of heated blankets for the agency, for his insight into how to shop for and store these products. UL is an organization that created a nationally recognized safety standard called Electrically Heated Bedding UL 964 and independently tests electric blankets to ensure they meet the necessary requirements. To learn about the health benefits of heated blankets, I spoke with TPI Level 1 certified physical therapist Cindy Langer, founder and owner of BodyFit Physical Therapy in Connecticut.

It used to be that many people believed that low-level magnetic fields (often called ELF) were not hazardous to our health because they were non-ionizing. However, we now know that even very low levels of EMF radiation, especially in close proximity over long periods of time, can be quite harmful.

The Degrees of Comfort electric blanket is the most evenly heated blanket in the review. During our temperature test, it experienced the least variation in temperatures throughout the blanket on each setting, meaning that your entire body will be warm with no cool or hot spots. Along with evenly heating, this blanket has an easy-to-use controller that includes a 1-20 heating range, a preheat setting, and a 1-10 hour adjustable auto-off timer. This wide range of customization allows each user to dial in the blanket to meet their needs. The controller's shape is nice, too, allowing the user to set it on an end table or nightstand. If you buy your blanket from a reputable UK retailer, as we did for our tests, then it should be safe. As far as EMF radiation for this blanket goes, I would expect the readings to be very similar to the Serta. The blanket itself should emit very little radiation the way it is designed. The control unit will likely emit a very small amount of magnetic radiation, but you don’t need to have this close to your body when using the blanket. If you’re a couple or a family who wants to use the blanket together, you may want to consider buying a larger heated blanket with two controllers. This way, two people can adjust their own heat setting on either side of the blanket. “A heated blanket with two controllers can minimize disagreements and help both people get a restful night’s sleep,” says Aludogbu. Woolrich’s Electric Heated Blanket has two controllers in the queen and king-sized versions. There are also some special features reserved for more expensive electric blankets. For instance, some models have a “preheat” option, which typically heats up the blanket on a warmer setting for 30 minutes or more to get your bed toasty before you hop in. Note that the preheat settings we tested specifically note not to use them when you’re in bed.

The best size for your electric blanket is relative to the size of the person or people buying it, and course, the size of your bed. Sizes start from throws, and go up to California King. If you’re buying an electric blanket to keep your muscles warm on the couch, a throw might be all you need. For a large bed, or for a couple, you may benefit from a full, queen, or king-sized blanket.

What to look for in a heated blanket

That is what we’re going to be talking about today. First, I’m going to outline what I think are the best low-EMF electric blankets on the market in 2023. After we’ve reviewed those, I want to spend some time talking about what EMF radiation is, and specifically about the radiation dangers that electric blankets present. This means that the product has not only gone through a full protocol and battery of tests but also that the third party periodically asks the manufacturer to demonstrate that the unit is being built with the right components. This reinforces that quality assurance processes are in place. “What you should see is that it has a third-party logo, and it should say the word ‘listed,’” explains Hawk. “Sometimes you have manufacturers who like to play games and say it’s compliant with the UL standard. That doesn’t mean anything. That’s a false or misleading advertisement.” A Reputable Retailer

When shopping for a heated blanket, first consider which size is right for you. “Heat will rapidly disperse across a blanket's surface. Blankets for single beds can be a great size, as they are often more energy-efficient than even larger blankets,” Lalitha McSorley, physical therapist at Brentwood Physio, says. It's also a good idea to note what kind of settings the blanket has, how heavy it is, and how easy it is to care for. If you're worrying about your children staying well this winter, then it's understandable that you might be considering allowing them to get under your heated throw. These blankets are perfectly safe for children to use under supervision, but they're not recommended for under fives. They're also not safe for children to sleep with, as they should always be supervised when using a heated throw. How we chose the best heated throw Subjectively, we considered the build quality of each blanket, how intuitive its controls were, how the shell material felt against the skin, and how noticeable the wires were inside each of the blankets. What You Should Know About Electric and Heated Blankets We like that it comes in a range of sizes, making it suitable for everyone’s needs, and that there are five ribbed fleece colors to choose from. However, there are only six heat settings, which is less than other items on our list. Also, the queen and king-sized versions are expensive. It does have a ton of features not seen on other items on this list, however, and it is made from premium materials. Durability After testing, each electric blanket and heated throw is washed and dried five times to simulate wear and tear. We then conduct a full electrical safety test on each one. None showed significant wear and tear, and all passed the test.Temperature settings: Look for adjustable heat settings so you can get the most out of your blanket – some options have as many as 10 different settings! Bear in mind that it does often cost more to run a blanket on the higher settings, so it's a good idea to opt for one with good range. Besides heated throws and blankets, Serta offers different products for your bedroom. You can buy their pillows, mattresses, bed frames, and sheets. If you have children or/and pets Serta has you covered. They sell crib mattresses, baby accessories, and beds for your pets. Where Will You Find Serta Products? Look for blankets that are made with fabrics like sherpa, fleece, and flannel. Since heated throws have an internal wiring system that you might be able to feel, a soft and warm material can help strike a balance between the functionality and comfort level of the blanket. How We Selected

First, I evaluated the feel, style and weight of each blanket, since comfort is a high priority. Then, I tried the blankets with their heating elements. I read the instructions and powered on the blankets on my king-size bed. I considered how warm they made me feel, noting any cold spots. I also tested the consistency of the heat on the surface—how evenly it is distributed—with an infrared thermometer. Since some electric blankets can feel lumpy instead of smooth, I noted whether I could feel wires on the top and underneath. Intuitive Design Electric blankets, especially on a cold winter day like the day I’m writing this, are a great way to warm up and stay cozy. However, as more people become aware of the dangers of EMF radiation, they start to ask themselves, is this electric blanket safe to use? Another one of my favorite features of this electric blanket is the dual remotes. In the King and Queen sizes of this blanket, there are actually two remotes, one on either side. This allows a couple to each set their own heat preferences if it is used as the primary or topper blanket for the bed. I was able to easily adjust the temperature in the middle of the night without trouble because the controller illuminates in the dark, a common feature in all the heated blankets I tested. The sleep mode button allows you to adjust the length of the auto shut-off to between 1 and 10 hours, designated by an “H” on the LED screen, which is a good detail for groggy nighttime operation. It’s also nice to know that the timer restarts automatically if the controller gets turned off or power is lost. Now, I don’t mention all of these to worry you, just to educate you. Reducing our exposure to EMF radiation in any way we can dramatically help to keep us healthy. Are Electric Blankets Safe? Reversible Sherpa warming blanket comes with one controller. That is because this heated throw is available only in one size. Dimensions of the Sherpa electric throw are 50″x 60″. The controller for the Sherpa/ Fleece reversible electric throw is equipped with 5 heat settings. Energy-saving and safe controller stops heating after 4 hours. Alright, now that we’ve talked about the 5 best low-EMF electric blankets that are available, it’s time to talk a little bit about if they are safe. The Cozy Feet is made from ultra-soft material, with excellent stitching along its edges. The edges of the blanket are rolled, so the seams feel as soft and fuzzy as the rest of the blanket. The inside of the blanket, which contains its heat-producing electrical wiring, features a stiffer fabric. While not as pliable as other electric blankets, this stiffness and weight help keep the blanket from folding and bending on itself, protecting the wires within. This one, unlike the last, is a queen-size blanket, so it’s actually quite large and can be a great topper for your bed.
