About this deal

This is the first full-length novel I read of Archer, and I remember the story, the characters even after 15 years. And that speaks a lot about this book. Doesn't it? In the early days of my reading, this book had become a catalyst in my discovery of joy of reading. So, I did recommend to read this to the students of the book club, who have started on a similar journey. I hope they like it as much as I did then. The story is so descriptive, informative, greatly entertaining and hilarious at times. It covers the whole spectrum of no integrity, but how strangers can become friend if fighting for the same cause. I particularly liked the scene during the wedding at the end of the book, it was highly intense and super hilarious.

The book lives up to this slogan. A simple and interesting read. It more or less reminds you of all the heist movies you watched. I started weak, gradually worked up a heavy head of steam, and, in retirement fell down deep - eventually, into the perfect peace of a clear conscience. Harvey's third love was his prize collection of orchids, and he had three times been a winner at the New England Spring Flower Show in Boston, twice beating old man Hunter into second place. Harvey Matcalfe , the king of successful financial con's , has conned a million dollar with empty promises of oil bonanza and instant wealth. Overnight, four men - the heir to an earldom, a Harley Street doctor, a Bond Street art dealer and an Oxford don find themselves penniless. But this time Harvey conned the wrong people. They unite and device a plan of revenge. And meanwhile, my own Me was just simply lost and bemused. I didn't fit into their mold (ouch, very punny).

The conned: an Oxford don, a revered society physician, a chic French art dealer, and a charming English lord. They have one thing in common. Overnight, each novice investor lost his life’s fortune to one man. The con: Harvey Metcalfe. A brilliant, self-made guru of deceit. A very dangerous individual. And now, a hunted man.Was Resistance, Rebellion and Death our motto? No. Leave that to our Union bosses - and they were rife in that place. I think this was Jeffery Archer’s first book and it reads like it should be. The word that comes to mind is ‘farcical’. A brilliant, self-made guru of deceit. A very dangerous individual. And, now, a hunted man. Fiction or autobiography ("Jeffrey Archer: The Truth?"), you be the judge. And if the author doesn't like the answer, he can sue us for everything we've got, not a penny more, not a penny less.* Sharp, Don (2 November 1993). "Don Sharp Side 6" (Interview). Harvey Metcalfe, a Polish immigrant to the United States, rises from messenger boy to corporate magnate, combining business skills with little loyalty and much ruthlessness. Over 40 years, he has mastered the shady deal, and by the 1960s is a multi-millionaire.

Nothing. Useless. And now we have started on the others I seem to have less time to concentrate on my own." In 1990 the book was adapted as a four-hour, two-part mini-series, directed by Clive Donner with Ed Asner as Harvey Metcalfe, Ed Begley Jr. as Stephen Bradley, François-Éric Gendron as Jean-Pierre Lamanns, Brian Protheroe as James Brigsley and Nicholas Jones as Dr. Robin Oakley, and also starring Jenny Agutter and Maryam d'Abo. Being fine upstanding, law abiding citizens all they want is exactly what was taken from then, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less. Arlene and Harvey were married in 1951 at a wedding more memorable for those who were absent than those who attended. They settled into Harvey's Lincoln home outside of Boston and very shortly afterward Arlene announced she was pregnant. She gave Harvey a daughter almost a year to the day after their marriage. Theodore Pitcairn, representing the Lord's New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, had pushed him over the top, he had only whetted his appetite further. The Lord giveth, and on that occasion the Lord had taken away. Although it was not fully appreciated in Boston, it was already recognized in the art world that Harvey had one of the finest Impressionist collections in the world, almost as widely admired as that of Walter Annenberg, President Nixon's Ambassador to London who, like Harvey, had been one of the few people to build up a major collection since the Second World War. When Henryk was a pimply and flourishing fourteen-year-old, his father died of what we now know to be cancer. His mother outlived her husband by no more than a few months, leaving the five children to fend for themselves. Henryk, like the other four, should have gone into the district orphanage for destitute children, but in the mid-1920s it was not hard for a boy to disappear in New York--though it was harder to survive. Henryk became a master of survival, a schooling which was to prove very useful to him in later life.
